Poker is a card game for 2 or more players. It is a game of chance and skill where the highest ranked hand wins. There are many different types of poker and rules of play vary between games. However there are some standard elements that are used in all poker games. These include the betting process, the hand rankings and the basic strategy tips.
After the players have received their two hole cards a round of betting takes place. This is started by the two mandatory bets called blinds that are placed into the pot before the dealer deals out any cards. These bets are designed to encourage people to play by creating a pot to win.
Each player is then given the opportunity to call, raise or fold their cards in accordance with their own playing strategy. In doing so they contribute money or chips to the pot and increase its size.
There is then a third card dealt face up on the board, this is called the flop. The players then get another opportunity to check, call or raise their bets. In most cases a fourth card is then dealt to the board which is known as the river.
Once everyone is done with their bets they reveal their hands and the player with the highest ranked hand wins the pot. If no one has a high enough hand they must fold their cards. There are also some exceptions to this rule depending on the rules of the particular game being played.
